SAP GUI

In this topic we will understand the SAP GUI. SAP GUI is the interface that allows Users to interact with the SAP system. SAP GUI represents the Presentation server in the 3-tier architecture of SAP system. When you logon to SAP, the First screen that appears before you is SAP Easy Access; a SAP user menu screen. This screen enables you to perform multiple tasks by allowing you to work on multiple sessions simultaneously.

SAP GUI Explained

The Menu Bar
The menus in the menu bar are used to perform various functional (like creating or modifying reports) and administrative (like creating user, assigning passwords) tasks. The Menus of the menu bar keeps on changing as per the current opened transaction.

The Standard Toolbar
The standard toolbar which is just below the Menu Bar provides us with various common options like Save, Exit, Back, Cancel and also the Command Field where we enter Tcodes to open transaction. The options of the Standard toolbar remain same for all the transactions but they do get Enable/Disable as per the requirement of transaction. A user can customize standard toolbar properties only at the output screen of its ABAP program using the "PF-STATUS" in their ABAP programs..

The Title Bar
The title bar shows the title of the current opened transaction. AS shown in the figure above the Title Bar shows the Title for current transaction as “SAP Easy Access “.

The Application Toolbar
The application toolbar contains application specific icons and buttons which helps in creating and maintaining various applications in SAP. The icons and buttons of application toolbar vary according to the functional requirements of the transaction.

The Status Bar
The status bar is located at the bottom of the SAP screen.  It provides information about applications, programs and general system related information. All the messages (Success, Error, Warning etc) which are to be displayed during transaction are shown at the left side of status bar. All the general information (like client number, server address, number of current sessions, transaction number, response time etc) is displayed at right side of status bar.

Customizing SAP GUI

You can customize the appearance of SAP GUI by modifying the Theme, color, fonts, window size etc. SAP provides us with “Customize Local Layout” option to do so. You can either press ALT+F12 or select the Customize Local Layout option located at right most side of Standard Toolbar. Select Customize Local Layout > Options and then a pop up window appears that provides with you with a variety of options to customize SAP. Please note that the changes you make here will only appear in your local system and not for everyone.

Customize Screen Layout Options

If any user wants to customize its GUI, SAP provides us an option to make user specific changes.
For doing that goto any transaction say SE11. Now goto Utilities in Menu bar.  Utilities -> Settings.

User Specific changes in SAP

Here you can make the necessary changes for almost all required utilities. You can change your ABAP editor from classic mode to new mode, set debugger mode, session breakpoints view etc.
